Handpan – a percussion instrument invented in Switzerland at the beginning of the 21st century. It consists of two steel bowls joined together by edges. The hemispheres form a characteristic ufo-like shape. The top is moulded in such a way that fields with a certain pitch are created. Their number, the shape of the recesses and the choice of scale influence the timbre and possibilities of the instrument. And the lower bowl has a resonance hole to amplify the sound.
When playing the handpan, the sound plates are gently struck with the hands, which creates vibrations and produces beautiful, harmonious melodies. The fingers are mainly used, but other parts of the hands also produce unique sounds. The instrument is held in the lap and can also be placed on a table, stool or tripod. Some snare stands can be used for handpans.
